Project Overview
San Diego State University's Interwork Institute in partnership with self-advocates including San Diego People First, families and professionals from rehabilitation, education, and housing will develop an information, training and resource center that will dramatically enhance the self-advocacy and/or leadership skills of at least 60 individuals with developmental disabilities. The project will focus on youths (ages 13-17) and emerging leaders (ages 18-30).
The project will employ 10-14 peer mentors. These mentors will provide advocacy to at least 46 other youth and emerging leaders. They will promote community employment, increase educational options, and maximize choice of residence for 46-50 peers. In addition to direct advocacy, Peer Mentors will speak to groups at meetings, classes and conferences about their experiences as advocates.
