San Diego People First...on the Move!
San Diego's 20th People First Conference will be held at the Mission Valley Marriott on June 12th & 13th. This conference is a two-day event for self-advocates age 18 and over, agency staff and family members. The conference introduces participants to the
power and
importance of the people first movement--the rights movement for individuals with developmental disabilities through workshops, exhibits, social time and networking. The conference provides a forum for self-advocates to share concerns, goals and successes. The theme this year is "Success and be your best with San Diego People First."
Keynote speaker
Sujeet Desai
Sujeet Desai is an accomplished musician born with Down Syndrome. Sujeet plays six instruments – two types of clarinet, saxophone, violin, piano, and drums. In June 2001 he graduated from high school with honors and in May 2003 from the Berkshire Hills Music Academy in Massachusetts. Sujeet travels around the world to do inspirational solo music performances and self-advocacy workshops. Sujeet is a recipient of 8 International awards for his music and self-advocacy. He has traveled to over 38 states in USA and 12 countries to share his music.
Besides music, Sujeet has a 2nd degree black belt in martial arts. He has won gold and silver medals in the World Games ’99 Special Olympics in swimming. Sujeet’s MISSION is to send a message across the world that given opportunities for their abilities, individuals with disabilities can “Make It Happen!
